Idol Ratings DOWN from Last Year

I mean, it was still a MONSTER debut, but Idol’s premiere viewership was down by around 4 million viewers from last year.

Tuesday’s debut was seen by an estimated 33.2 million viewers, down 11 percent from the 37.4 million who watched the first show of 2007.

Whatever. It’s still the most-watched show of the entire TV season.

Simon Cowell on Former Idol’s Lost Record Deals

Simon Cowell blames the instability of the music industry on Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard and Katharine McPhee losing their record deals.

Recently all three former Idols have been dropped by their labels.

Cowell says that just because you scored a record deal it does not guarantee you a lifelong career.

He says, “It’s a reflection on the unpredictability of the record business. Fortunately, we got it right more than we got it wrong. There’s no scientific way to explain what happens. It’s a reality show and what happens at the end is also reality.”

Cowell adds that the 2007 winners haven’t done as well as he had anticipated either.

“Naturally, I’m disappointed that they didn’t sell more copies or that neither artist has caught on fire. What you want (is) a Carrie (Underwood), Daughtry or Kelly Clarkson, where they’re competing with the Mariahs. It didn’t happen. Am I surprised? Not particularly. The public decided it’s not necessarily what they wanted, so we have to try to do better this year.”

Paula Abdul Discusses American Idol, Boyfriend

Paula Abdul chatted with Ladies Home Journal recently and she spoke about her time on American Idol.

“I have a strength I didn’t know I had. It’s a live program, and a naughty British man is constantly making people think there’s something weird in my Coca-Cola cup…But I’m proud of myself. I always figure out a way to swim.”

So Simon is the reason, hmmm? I’m sure it has nothing to do with the slurred speech or bizarre antics. Nah..!

Paula also discussed American Idol’s past contestants and how they deal with fame.

“Our performers think they’re going to manage, but the reality is they’re not. It can be a letdown even when you advance, because success is never what you expect. I just hope they have loving friends and family if they have to go back to their jobs at Burger King.”

Abdul went on to dish about her new boyfriend, restaurateur J.T. Torregiani.

“I’ve experienced real loneliness, so I love knowing there’s someone I can share the good and the not-so-good with. And I want kids! If it doesn’t happen naturally, I can always adopt.”

Awwww, sad!!!

Ruben Studdard — who basically did nothing successful after winning season 2 of AmIdol — has been dropped from J Records.

His last album only moved 235,000 copies.

That’s worse than Britney’s!

“I would have had Britney Spears last year when I thought she was trying to get it all back together again,” Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe told Usmagazine.com in a conference call Thursday.

“Britney, at this moment in time, I don’t think is well enough to do anything,” he continued. “I think she needs looking after. I think she needs to pull herself together.”

The new season of AmIdol starts in January.

Is everyone psyched???

What’s the verdict, kids?

Blake Lewis, “Break Anotha” Video

Check out the video for Blake’s first single.

You know what?

I like the song, and I like the video. I have the entire album now, too, and it’s actually not half bad. It’s not stellar, but it’s not bad.
