Kate Winslet was airbrushed? Say it ain’t so

Kate Winslet Vanity Fair December 2008

Kate Winslet has long been the voice of the fat girl not willing to succumb to the pressures of thin Hollywood. In February 2003, Kate even apologized for her retouched GQ magazine shoot saying she didn’t want people to think she was a hypocrite and had no intention of looking like the digitally slimmed photos of her.

Fast forward to today and Kate is once again under scrutiny for her recent Vanity Fair shoot. This time The Daily Mail asks an airbrush artist to examine Kate’s latest photos. His conclusion? LAWL! Photochopped!

The face: ‘There is no real detail in her face. Any detail or wrinkles have been removed. There are no eye bags, contours and smile lines.

‘The whites of her eyes have been cleaned up and are now a really clean, crisp white. I’d say her lips have possibly been made slightly fuller as well.’

The skin: ‘Her skin has generally been retouched all over so she has no lines or blemishes at all. Her skin is completely perfect.’

The hands and feet: ‘There are no wrinkles or lines or veins on her hands and feet and this just is not natural.’

The figure: ‘Her back and lower body have been pinched in to make her look thinner and to give her some curves.

‘Her bottom has been rounded off so it looks nice and pert. I would be very surprised if her bottom was like that naturally. Her thigh appears to have been made slimmer so it appears more toned.

‘And in the shot of her sitting down on the front cover, it’s possible her legs were made slightly thinner so they also appear more toned.’

Kate’s rep denies this and tells PEOPLE: “Kate is furious at suggestions that her body has been airbrushed.”

Whatever. Magazines airbrush photos. It’s a fact. There’s no way Vanity Fair is going to put a baggy-eyed, wrinkly Kate Winslet on their cover. They sell magazines, not body image. Who wants to buy an issue with an ugly fatty on the cover. If people want to see a natural Kate Winslet with all her blemishes, they’re just going to have to do what I do and install a spycam in her shower.

Quote of the day/week/month?

Kate Winslet & Leo

Immature guys like me can never get their mind out of the gutter and often look for double entendres in everything people say. It makes the day go by faster. This is a good one to end the week with. Kate Winslet talked to EW about how it was weird to have her husband direct a sex scene between her and her best friend, DiCaprio, in their upcoming film, Revolutionary Road and how she was pleasantly surprised that the chemistry was still there.

“I hadn’t realized how much my chemistry with him since Titanic would still stick,” she said. “It’s great to discover we can just slip right into it, like muscle memory.”

Kate probably insisted on penetration. For realism, of course. Serious actor and all that.

Is Angelina going to put her foot in it? Winslet promised year off, didn’t do it

Is Angelina going to take a year off work as she’s promising, or is she going to put her foot in it once a juicy role comes along that she can’t pass up? Maybe she was trying to redeem herself by saying she’ll take a year off. A lot of people bashed her for going back to work when she promised to be a stay at home mom after adopting Pax. Angelina has so much help and a lot of flexibility in having her children nearby while she’s working. Even if she had a 9 to 5 job, no one would be saying she’s a bad mom for working if she wasn’t famous and didn’t insist that she wasn’t going to work:

“I’m working this summer. I’m in Prague for a few months, then I take two months off, then I work for two months,” Jolie said Tuesday while promoting A Mighty Heart at the Cannes Film Festival. “And then I take a year off.”

Asked if the time off will be for her family, she replied: “Yes.”

Lower-profile celebrity mom Kate Winslet said last October that she was going to take a year off working to stay with her two children Mia, six ,and Joe, three and a half. She was back working in Mid-May, which means she was off for about seven months, not a full year. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, but when Winslet went back on her word no one really pointed it out.

I don’t think anyone should have to take time off for their kids if they don’t want to, that’s their business. Some moms work, and some stay at home, and it’s a personal choice. When celebrities make public statements like this, though, people will call them on it if they don’t fulfill their promises.

The Daily Mail pointed out Angelina’s new latitude and longitude tattoo on her left upper arm, as we mentioned yesterday. It is indeed the coordinates for her new adopted son Pax’s birthplace, as was speculated. The new “M” on Angelina’s palm is for her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, according to the Daily Mail, and is not for Maddox as we stated.

Here’s an interview with Angelina Jolie and some footage from Cannes. She looks a lot tinier in the video than in the pictures. thanks to Oh No They Didn’t for finding this.

Kate Winslet donates settlement for diet story to eating disorder groups

In March Kate Winslet received an undisclosed settlement from British gossip rag Grazia for a story that claimed she was secretly seeing a diet guru. Not only was it a fabrication, Kate said, it particularly offended her because she sees herself as a healthy role model for women, and she doesn’t want people ever thinking she would see a diet doctor.

She donated £3,000, or about US $6,000 to one eating disorder charity. The settlement was said to be divided among three charities, so it’s safe to assume it was around £9,000, or US $18,000.

Kate Winslet doesn’t get a lot of press because she lives quite a normal, regular life as a mom. Last October she announced that she’ll take a year off acting to concentrate on her role as a mom. Playing a cheating wife and preoccupied mom in Little Children helped Kate realize what’s important in life. According to IMDB she is keeping her promise. She’s slated for two films to be released in 2008, a voice character in the animated film Gnomeo and Juliet, and the lead in the film Revolutionary Road, directed by her husband. Both films are listed as pre-production status.

She has two children, Mia Honey, 6, from her first marriage, and Joe Alfie, three and a half, from her current marriage to director Sam Mendes.

Here are pictures of Kate at the Oscars.

Update: Kate didn’t quite take a full year off. She was seen filming scenes for Revolutionary Road, her new movie with Leonardo Dicaprio, in New York City yesterday.

Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet together again

Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet have both signed on to do Revolutionary Road. Variety reports that the Sam Mendes film is about "heart-rending and bleak tome, celebrated for its storytelling style, follows a seemingly happy suburban couple with two children in the mid-1950s who find themselves caught between their true desires and the pressure to conform — with explosive consequences." The two have not worked together since Titanic and it will be interesting if we will be able to see them as anything but Jack and Rose.

And if this movie has them go 30 years into the future does that mean their next movie together will be based in the ’80s?

Kate Winslet says Grazia magazine made up diet story

British magazine Grazia makes up a ton of shit about celebrities, and is recently responsible for the “Jennifer Aniston is adopting two American babies” claim. Kate Winslet has called them on their story that she visited a diet doctor, and said it particularly offends her because she’s a role model for healthy, normal-sized women and does not want girls to think she’s a hypocrite. She’s planning on suing the magazine:

The allegations, which were printed in the glossy magazine Grazia, are “completely untrue,” Winslet told reporters on the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday.

“I’m going to fight for myself. I don’t want people thinking that I would ever go to a diet doctor, I would ever buy into that stuff,” Winslet, who is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Little Children, told a BBC radio interviewer. “I never have done, I never will.”

Last week, Grazia printed a story alleging that the actress visited the Chinese Healing Institute in Santa Monica to help with neck pain, and also to lose weight.

On Monday, attorneys for the actress at Schillings law firm in London said proceedings for libel were being issued. Winslet’s rep, Sara Keene, underlined her client’s feelings, saying: “Kate is angry and upset about it because it is an issue she feels very strongly about. She will be issuing legal proceedings. She wants to get the message out there….”

“I will continue to say what I feel about this issue of women being thin and emaciated. It’s just out of control,” she said Sunday. “I know I’m a role model to young women. It’s a role that I take very, very seriously and I would never want anyone to ever think I was a hypocrite in doing something like going to a diet doctor, for goodness sake. I mean, it’s really, really ridiculous.”

Kate said she has “a real woman’s figure” and that she doesn’t starve herself. She looks pretty gorgeous to me, and at least someone is standing up for the size 6/8 women.

Mandy Moore recently said that she felt bad about being a normal size, and that she would go to a photo shoot and be expected to fit into a 0 or a 1 sample size:

“I want to be healthy, but in a industry where you can’t wear a sample size because it’s like a 0 or 2, it makes you feel bad about yourself. To go to photo shoot, its like, ‘Ugh, God, can’t you just at least get a regular size, like a 6 or 8 or something?”

I would freaking love to be a size six, which I was able to maintain when I was single but seems kind of out of reach at this point. I got down to a six again briefly before the holidays, but am an eight now. It takes a lot of discipline and work for me, and with a toddler, a full time job from home, and trying to make dinner and maintain a halfway decent house it’s pretty hard to stay skinny. (Plus it’s hard not to eat when I’m stressed. Can you guys relate?) If I had a lot of help I could probably do it, but why is it so important to me?

Good for Winslet and Moore for standing up for normal-sized women. And with some more voluptuous actresses getting press now, maybe Hollywood will start to buck the super-skinny trend.

Here is Kate looking great at the Baftas. Pictures from SuperiorPics.
